Veneers Q & A

What are Dental Veneers?

Dental veneers are very thin coverings that are placed on the surfaces of teeth to correct a number of cosmetic issues, including:

  • Deeply discolored teeth
  • Teeth that are worn or uneven
  • Crooked teeth
  • Gaps between teeth
  • Teeth that appear too small

Porcelain veneers can be tinted to match the patient’s natural teeth and they provide a longer-lasting and more natural-looking alternative to cosmetic bonding, which uses composite resins applied to the surface of the teeth to address cosmetic concerns.

How are Dental Veneers Applied?

Application of porcelain veneers requires two office visits. At the first visit, a small amount of the tooth surface material will be removed to ensure the surface of the veneer is “even” with neighboring teeth and doesn’t “stick out.” Next, an impression of the tooth will be made and sent to a lab where the veneer will be carefully crafted. Depending on how much tooth material is removed, a temporary veneer may be placed on the tooth to protect it while the permanent restoration is being made. At the second visit, the temporary veneer will be removed and the tooth surface will be thoroughly cleaned. Then, the veneer will be “dry fitted” and adjusted before being applied with a strong adhesive and gently buffed.

Are Veneers Hard to Care For?

No, veneers can be cared for just like unrestored teeth, with regular brushing and flossing and twice-yearly dental visits to ensure the tooth and the veneer stay in good shape. To prevent chips, it’s important to avoid biting or chewing on hard candy, ice, or hard objects like pens or pencils.

How Long Will My Veneers Last?

Porcelain veneers are very durable, and with proper care, they can last a decade or longer.

Can Veneers Be Whitened?

Veneers are designed to be resistant to permeation by stains, and they’re also resistant to whitening products. To make sure your veneer matches your teeth when they look their best, you may want to have a whitening treatment before the veneer is made. That way, the veneer tint will match your teeth at their whitest and brightest.
